On The Making Of Una


This is character that I created a while back for a story I was developing for my graduate film, before I concocted Distance and made that instead. I still really like the character design I created for the main character, Una, a girl who has lived her whole life on the Sun. The light that comes from the Sun is created by the flames of millions of candles that lie within it. Una's job consists of creating day and night. At dawn she must light all the candles and at dusk she must blow them all out. She is never without her matches, wearing them in a military style bandolier. Her belt buckle also serves as a striking surface. I was trying to combine the influences of celtic art and the cold war when I designed Una.

So after that bit of back story.....

I wanted to make a new puppet and wanted to have a go at a more realistic looking human than my previous human puppets, which have been heavily stylized, so I decided that bringing Una to life was the way to go. It also gives me a chance to try out some more materials....  including latex which I'm quite excited about!
